Olivier is Deaf since birth. He knows that many sounds come to his ear muted and at random without the aid of a hearing aid. Sometimes Olivier can hear sounds with his hearing aids but he cannot always understand what the person is saying on the radio, when somebody is talking behind his back or when he tries to work out what are the announcements the train station sound systems.
Olivier can enjoy the sound of music beat at high volume and the feel of vibration and movements.
This image shows a face looking west and all the line drawings indicate various sounds going to the ear but some sounds cannot get through or be understood. Hence the words “Sound barriers”. The white sound waves are touching the ear but are not getting through the ear drum. So this person’s face is not affected by any impression.
